While the month of Muharram-al-Haram is an important chapter in Islamic history, the new year in the Islamic calendar also begins with the moon of Muharram. The sighting of the moon marks the end of one Islamic year and the beginning of another. Every year the moon of Muharram is seen and Karbala and Imam Hussain are remembered. Hijri year varies. But what is the message of the Islamic New Year? What is the purpose of Islamic history? What lessons have we learned from the past year? How will we spend the coming year? We have nothing to do with these. But no, it must be because our age has decreased by one year at this time, So we should think about ourselves and review the past year.
- How much good did we do last year and how many wrong?
- To what extent did we fulfill our responsibilities and to what extent did we neglect it?
- How honestly have we acted in paying the rights and how much have we been betrayed?
- Our prayers… How many prayers did we offer in a year? And how much did we owe? And how successful were we in performing the last Qaza prayers?
- Was zakat not obligatory on us and we remained unaware of it? If there was a duty, how honestly did we pay zakat?
- If Hajj was obligatory, how much effort did we make for it?
- How did we earn what we earned for the whole year? Was the morsel we ate/fed was Halal or Haram?
- How well was the money we earned and how much was wasted?
- Did we do anything for the welfare of religion and nation with the money earned or just satisfies our hunger?
- To what extent did we serve, obey, and obey our parents? Did some of our actions hurt his heart? For how many days in the whole year he was happy with us and for how many days the curse of his displeasure rained on us?
- How much attention have we paid to the education and training of our children and what have we done for their better future?
- How successful have we been in paying for our spouse’s rights?
- How was our attitude towards neighbors throughout the year?
- How did we treat friends and relatives?
There are countless questions we should ask ourselves and keep track of how we spent the last year. How good and how bad was the last year for us? What have we gained and what have we lost in the past year? If last year was good then try to make next year even better and if it is not good then learn from past shortcomings and next year try to overcome these shortcomings so that the special qualities of our beloved Prophetﷺ “And your coming (time) is better than the last.” May we also get the Faizan (blessings) and may our future life be happy…
Surely Allah is the one who guides us.
