No one can deny the importance of knowledge. The need for education has existed throughout all ages. Education has played a crucial role in the progress and decline of nations. Those who befriended it continued to achieve success in every era. However, those who turned their backs on education faced defeat and decline. Education is essential for everyone, regardless of whether they are male or female, rich or poor, worker or trader, etc. It is a fundamental right for all human being, and no one can take it away. Education is the key to success for both individuals and societies.
Today, the entire world emphasizes knowledge and promotes various slogans to motivate people about education. Americans say, “Knowledge is light, knowledge is power.” Indians say, “Sab padhe, sab badhe” (Everyone studies, everyone grows) and another slogan, “Beti bachao, Beti padhao” (Save the daughter, educate the daughter). Some say, “Education is the key to success,” while others say, “Knowledge is wealth.” Nelson Mandela once said, “If you have knowledge, you can change the whole world.” Bhimrao Ambedkar said, “Knowledge is the biggest power in the world.” But when we study the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), we find that the Last Messenger of Allah conveyed this message 1,400 years ago on the land of Arabia:
“عليكم بالعلم فإن العلم نور، عليكم بالعلم فإن العلم قوة”
“Acquiring knowledge is compulsory for you because knowledge is light. Acquiring knowledge is compulsory for you because knowledge is power.”
In another place, he said: “العلم حياة”
“Knowledge is life.”
He also said: “خيركم من تعلم القرآن وعلمه”
“The best among you is the one who learns the Qur’an and teaches it.”
And in another Hadith, he said:
“العلم خير من العبادة”
“Knowledge is better than worship.”
He also said: “من صار بالعلم حيا لا يموت أبدا”
“The person who becomes alive through knowledge will never die.”
A follower of Islam said about knowledge:
“ما فرق بين الإنسان والبهائم إلا بالعلم”
“There is no difference between a human and an animal except knowledge.”
This was said by the renowned Imam Ghazali. Who was Imam Ghazali? Imam Ghazali was a philosopher, a thinker, and a great Islamic scholar. After reading his biography, an Englishman said, “I like Islam because Imam Ghazali is a follower of Islam.” This shows us that knowledge is incredibly important for humanity. There is nothing greater than knowledge in the entire world.
Every person needs knowledge, whether they are wealthy or a beggar, rich or poor, king or slave. A wealthy man can become a beggar at any time, but knowledge is a treasure that can never be lost.
Knowledge is an immortal wealth. It is so valuable that nothing can compare to it. The person who has knowledge possesses everything. Knowledge is a wealth that grows through sharing. No one can steal it, nor can it be taken away. Everything in the world can be stolen, destroyed by floods, or lost in some way—except knowledge. Knowledge is a treasure that is safe from all risks.
Great rulers and famous kings have come and gone, but today, no one even remembers their names. However, those who acquired knowledge, spread it, or used it to invent remarkable things, their names are still alive in history. Today, few people know the name of Egypt’s Pharaoh, but who doesn’t know the names of Imam Ghazali, Sheikh Saadi, Maulana Rumi, Mujaddid Alf Sani, Imam Ahmad Raza Khan Barelvi, Dr. Iqbal, Newton, Aristotle, and Albert Einstein? They are still remembered today because of their knowledge.
Knowledge shows us the path of goodness and teaches us to distinguish between right and wrong. Through knowledge, man can achieve anything.
When there was a lack of knowledge, people couldn’t even understand the earth. Today, due to an abundance of knowledge, mankind is striving to conquer the moon and stars, and the day is not far when, through knowledge, man will achieve this as well.
